Short Answer

A Personal Data Store is about data, not files. We currently do not allow general file storage within the Personal Data Store. Files such as word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations in a variety of formats and PDFs, programme files, pictures, music and video already have a wealth of storage options freely available. Our focus is about storing the verified data about individuals' lives which could include information about files stored elsewhere and controlling the access to them. There are some specific areas where we have enabled images and documents to be stored such as a profile picture, digitally signed documents relating to a contract, but in general we focus on verified data from which documents can be generated.

Technical Answer

Storing files is not a technical challenge for Mydex CIC, and we have focused our energy on verified data collection, storage and distribution. Integrating into existing file storage services using their APIs is a more effective route as it allows us to drive control over access and capture the meta data about files easily without requiring an individual to move out of traditional social sharing solutions for general files. We are not focused on replicating music, video streaming services or social networks and picture hosting services.
